FAMILY MEDIATION BASICS: Mediation in the Context of Separation and Divorce

In this training, participants will be introduced to an in-depth model for conducting mediation in the context of separation and divorce. A process that typically unfolds over a period of weeks and months will be explored intensively over 5 action-packed days.

Skills related to conducting initial interviews and assessment, co-mediator planning, and leading mediation in situations where parents are separating or divorcing yet need to maintain a functional relationship related to parenting will be explored and practiced. Experienced family mediators will provide coaching and feedback along the way.

May 2019

This training is designed for practitioners interested in increasing their capacity to support separating families through the transition of family reorganization including, family lawyers, therapists, parent coaches, and community mediators.

This five-day workshop provides participants with the opportunity to:

  • Explore their own assumptions about the nature of conflict and mediation as well as the role that culture and worldview plays in how differing mediators define and approach their work;
  • Explore the foundational assumptions, principles, and theories that guide Facilitated Solutions’ approach to the work of divorce and separation mediation;
  • Learn and practice an in-depth model for mediating in divorce and separation situations (i.e. from initial interviews to assessment to coaching, mediation, and agreement/closure);
  • Learn and specific frameworks and skills for conducting interviews, mediation, and coaching in divorce and separation situations;
  • Explore the specific dynamics related to working with families and couples (including assessing for violence and power dynamics, effects of conflict and stress on children, child developmental issues related to the drafting of parenting plans, etc.) that differentiate family mediation from other mediation contexts;
  • Explore the personal qualities (i.e. presence and self-awareness) that are needed to effectively mediate in divorce and separation contexts, including how one might attend to and cultivate these more intangible yet critical elements;
  • Build overall relationship-building skills, including interpersonal listening, empathy, leadership, and assertiveness in the role of a third-party mediator.
